    Does plaquenil reduce rheumatoid arthritis

I know I had never heard of it until my rheumatologist said that is what I have...along w/osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. My blood tests are negative for RF but my CRP test was above normal. Ai Yi Yi Plaquenil reduces inflammation in many Rheumatic disorders, the mode of action is pretty complicated though so I shan't bore you with all the details, but basically it prevents your dendritic cells (these are messengers for your immune system, if you will) from interacting with your T-Cells (a special type of white blood cell which through a convoluted and boring process, causes inflammation when an infection is found, and these basically malfunction with inflammatory disorders). So, he started me on 400 mg of Plaquenil a day and he just upped it to 600 mg a day. As I said previously, my Rheumatologist now says it is inflammatory osteoarthrits. Why am I taking Plaquenil, which does help tremedously BTW, if I don't have RA or Lupus. This "dendritic deactivation" (I made that phrase up) helps reduce your immune system being silly and inflaming your joints.

Summary. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is a drug that is classified as an anti-malarial drug. Plaquenil is prescribed for the treatment or prevention of malaria. It is also prescribed for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and the side effects of lupus such as hair loss, joint pain, and more. Quinacrine Atabrine is another alternative, but it is prescribed less often because it can sometimes cause a yellow discoloration of the skin. It is sometimes given in addition to hydroxychloroquine if the patient does not respond to Plaquenil alone. Plaquenil is the brand name for the prescription drug hydroxychloroquine. It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others.

Hi everyone, I have fibro and RS and Sjoegren's. I have been on Plaquenil for a little over 2 months now. I can say that I am not having pain like I used to, and I am so grateful for that! The problem now is the undending fatigue! I don't know if this is just the RA in full swing, or if it is a side effect of the Plaquenil. According to the American College of Rheumatology, hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil, is a “disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD,” meaning that it helps reduce the pain and swelling that come with arthritis. It can also reduce the incidence of joint damage, thus lessening the risk of developing a long-term disability from complications of RA. Rheumatoid arthritis; discoid and systemic lupus erythematosus SLE. Over the long term hydroxychloroquine can reduce pain, swelling and joint stiffness. If you have lupus, it may also improve the rash. It may be as long as 12 weeks before you notice the benefits. Hydroxychloroquine is often taken in combination with other drugs such as methotrexate.
