Researchers at Cornell University have found that the drug tamoxifen, used to treat and prevent breast cancer, also stimulates the ovaries' ability to produce eggs. In a study of 12 breast cancer patients, doctors found that by giving women tamoxifen, more eggs than normal could be retrieved, says Kutluk Oktay, MD, assistant professor of reproductive endocrinology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York. Every patient in his study had one or more embryos that were either immediately transferred or frozen for later attempts at pregnancy. Now two years' later, two pregnancies have occurred -- one involving a set of twins, he tells Web MD. Oktay's paper appears in the January edition of the European medical journal Human Reproduction. Tamoxifen has had a major impact on reducing the risk of breast cancer recurrences, but many younger women are either not starting treatment or are discontinuing it early. This could be caused by worries about fertility, according to research published in on 24 August 2015. To understand more about the reasons behind the low levels of uptake, researchers looked at the electronic medical records of young women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer treated at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s Lynn Sage Comprehensive Breast Center in Chicago, Illinois. BACKGROUND: Both selective estrogen receptor modulators, tamoxifen and clomiphene have been used for ovulation induction for patients with anovulatory infertility. This meta-analysis sought to compare the effectiveness of tamoxifen to clomiphene for the induction of ovulation and achievement of pregnancy. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, BIOSIS, Pre MEDLINE, CINAHL, International Pharmaceutical Abstracts, DDSR, ACP Journal Club, DARE and CCTR, along with reference lists and national experts. Inclusion criteria were prospective clinical trials, which compared tamoxifen and clomiphene for ovulation induction in infertile couples with isolated anovulatory infertility. Main outcome measures were ovulation rate and clinical pregnancy rate. Pooled odds ratios were obtained using random effects meta-analysis. After pooling all the trials, the use of tamoxifen or clomiphene citrate resulted in similar ovulation rates [odds ratio (OR) 0.755, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.513–1.111]. There was no benefit of tamoxifen over clomiphene citrate in achievement of pregnancy per cycle (OR 1.056, 95% CI 0.583–1.912) or per ovulatory cycle (OR 1.162, 95% CI 0.632–2.134).
