Dextromethorphan and guaifenesin are contained in many medicines available over the counter. If you take certain products together you may accidentally take too much of one or more types of medicine. Read the label of any other medicine you are using to see if it contains dextromethorphan or guaifenesin. The study is based on acetaminophen / dextromethorphan / doxylamine / pseudoephedrine and hydroxychloroquine sulfate the active ingredients of Nyquil and Plaquenil, respectively, and Nyquil and Plaquenil the brand names. Other drugs that have the same active ingredients e.g. generic drugs are not considered. Hydroxychloroquine is commonly used alongside other disease-modifying drugs including methotrexate – especially for rheumatoid arthritis. However, some drugs can interact with hydroxychloroquine. Indigestion remedies for example, antacids including some over-the-counter preparations can stop hydroxychloroquine being absorbed.

For all uses of hydroxychloroquine: WARNING/CAUTION: Even though it may be rare, some people may have very bad and sometimes deadly side effects when taking a drug. Do not start, stop, or change the dose of any drug without checking with your doctor.
