This is to warn anyone prescribed doxycycline in the summer to stay out of the sun. I just returned from the ER (4 hours there) to get treated for that same thing. Two days after starting it, my hands became tingly, then my feet, then they started to feel hot, then burning, like they were in flames. Today on our boat, the sun felt like it was 100 degrees on my skin, I moved to the shade & it didn't get any better other than the sun wasn't feeling like it was burning my skin off. My face was flushed, not sunburnt but flushed red, my forehead & my toes had dark red swelling on the tops of them. My skin on my toes & hands burnt like an open wound if I itched them & if they brushed up against anything. The ER doc said usually doctors do NOT prescribe doxycycline in the summer for that reason, he even said you can get the reaction even from sun coming thru a window in your house. I was prescribed doxycycline last weekend and a couple days later I went to the beach. It took almost 10 days for my toes to get back to normal & the sun still seems hot on them, but at least the redness is gone & the swelling, my toes were the worst. They really should put a warning on the label for it, as a lot of meds say photosensitive & i've never reacted to one of them & since the ER doc said doxy is the worst, there should be a warning on the label. If you go to a search engine and type in doxy.will come up with several medical sites that list info on that medication, and yes, they do have a warning on them for photosensitivity.. Hope this helps someone else & prevents them a trip to the ER this summer. Thank GOD I wasn't there longer than two hours because my reaction was bad enough. Doc's don't tell us all that needs to be known on meds, so it's up to us to educate ourselves about the adverse reactions.. My wife has been suffering from chronic lyme and bartonella for a while now, and is has progressively been getting worse. She stopped taking the meds and feels better but not great. She had been put, once again, on doxycyline -- 100 mg in the AM and another 100 mg in the PM. The doctor she is seeing is not being much help in diagnosing the cause of this pain. Our research has taken us to the "herx" reaction of the bartonella to the antibiotics, OR a reaction to the doxycycline itself. After a week of this, she started developing severe leg pains in both legs. Obviously, if it's a reaction to the doxy then she'll need to stop taking it. But if it's herx, then she'll have to grin and bear it. In addition to the general indications for all members of the tetracycline antibiotics group, doxycycline is frequently used to treat Lyme disease, chronic prostatitis, sinusitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, Moraxella catarrhalis, Brucella melitensis, Chlamydia pneumoniae, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae are generally susceptible to doxycycline, while some Haemophilus spp., Mycoplasma hominis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa have developed resistance to varying degrees. Some Gram-positive bacteria have developed resistance to doxycycline. Up to 44% of Streptococcus pyogenes and up to 74% of S. faecalis specimens have developed resistance to the tetracycline group of antibiotics. When bacteriologic testing indicates appropriate susceptibility to the drug, doxycycline may be used to treat these infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria: The World Health Organization Guidelines states that the combination of doxycycline with either artesunate or quinine may be used for the treatment of uncomplicated malaria due to Plasmodium falciparum or following intravenous treatment of severe malaria. Doxycycline kills the symbiotic Wolbachia bacteria in the reproductive tracts of parasitic filarial nematodes, making the nematodes sterile, and thus reducing transmission of diseases such as onchocerciasis and elephantiasis. Doxycycline has been used successfully to treat sexually transmitted, respiratory, and ophthalmic infections. Doxycycline reaction Herx or Doxycycline Reaction?
